Demand for the torquey and fuel-efficient Ram 1500 Ecodiesel has apparently not waned since the oil-burner debuted as a 2014 model. The diesel-powered light-duty pickup got off to a hot start when it first went on sale, as more than 8000 orders rolled in within three days of availability. Now, in response to growing consumer demand that means the truck consistently flies off dealer lots in a matter of days, Chrysler will increase production of the Ecodiesel model to represent 20 percent of all 2015 Ram 1500 volume.
“Innovation sometimes comes with risk, but being first to market with a diesel engine for the half-ton segment has shown to be a great decision for the Ram Brand,” said Ram president Bob Hegbloom in a statement. The numbers support Hegbloom’s claim—Ram is as of last month 24 percent ahead of its 2013 position in year-to-date truck sales.
Customers are flocking to the 2015 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel in large part for the efficiency of its 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6. Churning out 240 hp and a healthy 420 lb-ft of torque that allows it to tow up to 9200 lbs, the 2015 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel still manages to return EPA fuel economy ratings of 20/28/23 mpg city/highway/combined. That’s well ahead of the 18/24/20 mpg seen on the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra V-6. Official fuel economy for the 2015 Ford F-150 is still under wraps, but when figures are revealed in November, we can expect an improvement of as much as 20 percent compared to the old truck.
Beyond the fuel economy and performance afforded by its eight-speed automatic transmission and air suspension, we celebrated the Ram 1500 Ecodiesel for its everyday appeal. “The Ram 1500 Ecodiesel is not a muscle truck—for that, you’ll need to stick with the 5.7-liter V-8,” senior editor David Zenlea said of the truck in February. “The key to [its] charm isn’t that it’s fast, but that it’s so darn nice.” A quiet interior, tons of features, and easy ingress and egress make the Ram a tempting choice in a competitive segment.
The base price for the 2015 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel is $30,890, available on the Tradesman model with rear-wheel drive, an eight-foot box, and the requisite eight-speed automatic transmission, and destination fees. The 3.0-liter Ecodiesel engine carries a $4000 premium on some lower trims of the 2015 Ram 1500, and as little as $2850 on higher trim levels.
