Based on the standard 2015 Ford Transit van, the Transit Skyliner concept shown in New York highlights the possibilities for customizing the new model that goes on sale this summer. In partnership with customizing shop Galpin Auto Sports, Ford designed its own vision of, "luxury motor coaches."
The Skyliner is based on the long-wheelbase, high-roof version of the 2015 Ford Transit, and is equipped with its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. While exterior changes are limited to new wheels and a custom silver paint job, the van's interior benefits from a quartet of giant, plush reclining chairs. With wood flooring and LED ambient ceiling light, it's easy to forget that this "lounge" is really the inside of a cargo van.
Ford envisions four distinct modes for the Transit Skyliner concept. In theater mode, a 52-inch movie screen descends so occupants can watch films or satellite TV, while listening to a surround-system sound that uses speakers specifically made for the 2015 Ford Transit. In business model, a motorized table emerges and the four seats swivel so passengers can conduct mobile meetings. In reception mode, the sliding door opens fully and the seats face outward so the van can provide entertainment and seating at gatherings. Finally, switching to travel mode allows passengers to recline their seats and extend footrests.
"Traveling in Transit Skyliner is an experience unlike any other," Ford commercial truck marketing manager Tim Stoehr said in a statement. "We created the vehicle to highlight the potential of the Ford Transit platform for the limousine market and to showcase Transit as the next generation of modern, cool, fuel-efficient vans."
Look for the Ford Transit Skyliner concept at the New York auto show, but don't expect to see its accoutrements available at your local Ford dealership.
