Although the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan got a mid-cycle refresh in 2014, the automaker is already hard at work on the next-generation model. A camouflaged Mercedes-Benz E-Class prototype was spotted testing in Germany.
From these images, the prototype appears to have softer, more rounded lines similar to those of the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class and new 2015 C-Class sedan. The current E-Class, which received a mid-cycle refresh for 2014, has a relatively more chiseled look than its recently redesigned stable mates
Powertrain options are still forthcoming, but should include the automaker’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 that’s already making its way into Benz’s current lineup like the 2015 C-Class where it’s tuned to produce 329 hp. Though a twin-turbo V-8 may still be the optional engine, we reported earlier this year that Mercedes-Benz is set to revive its inline-six cylinder engines, with this next E-Class being a strong likelihood for the first application of this 3.0-liter straight six. As with most Mercedes-Benz sedans these days, plug-in hybrid and high-performance AMG variants will surely debut after the standard E-Class. Also look for Benz’s new nine-speed automatic transmission, which has already launched in Europe in the E350 Bluetec, replacing the previous seven-speed auto gearbox to to increase fuel economy and acceleration.
Like the 2015 C-Class, we expect more of the current S-Class sedan’s technology and refinement to make it into the next E-Class, which is expected to debut in 2016 as a 2017 model.
