Jaguar continues to slowly trickle out information on the forthcoming XE, its smaller entry-luxury car that will hit the U.S. market in 2016. After revealing a rendering of the car's nose and chassis at the 2014 Geneva auto show, Jaguar today hinted at the look of the real car by draping a wrap over its aluminum chassis.
As expected, the Jaguar XE looks very similar to the last prototype we spied testing in the U.K. As the rendering release in Geneva showed, its rounded nose features angular headlights, a large rectangular grille with rounded edges, and a trio of air intakes at the lower edge of the front fascia. The roofline forms an almost perfect arc, reaching its peak above the car's B-pillar before dropping down to the trunk. Though Jaguar issued only one view of the wrapped XE, it’s clear from the chassis cutaway photos (below) and our spy photos that the decklid will be short, and the car's rear will have a flatter design than the dramatically rounded nose.
The Jaguar XE will be more affordable than the current XF sedan, and is designed to take on German sports sedans like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. It will launch with 2.0-liter gasoline and diesel engines from a new family that Jaguar calls Ingenium, and can be equipped with both rear- and all-wheel drive. The Jaguar XE is expected to debut in production guise at the Paris auto show this fall and goes on sale in Europe early next year.
Because the Jaguar XE will be similar in size to the current XF, the next-generation Jaguar XF will grow larger. After the XE sedan debuts, Jaguar will also adapt its aluminum chassis to create a crossover based on the C-X17 concept.
Expect more Jaguar XE details to slowly trickle out in the months leading up to the car's official introduction later this year.
