Mercedes-Benz C-Class Plug-in Hybrid Spied

We spied Mercedes-Benz testing plug-in hybrid wagon and sedan versions of the new C-Class in Germany. With the Mercedes-Benz S500 plug-in hybrid announced for the U.S. at the 2013 Frankfurt show, and the E400 Hybrid already on sale here, it’s no surprise that Mercedes will expand its hybrid range so that the next-gen C-Class will also get a plug-in hybrid variant.
Although both the wagon and sedan C-Class were tested, there are no plans for any version the of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class wagon to come stateside as of now. The wagon’s rear half is totally obscured by black plastic and fabric covers, but we can at the very least see the plug-in charging port on the rear bumper, which betrays some of the prototpe’s inner workings. The sedan is fully exposed, and the rear charging door in the same location is plainly visible
European bureau chief Georg Kacher reported last year on some of the nuts and bolts of the C-Class hybrid offerings. For the European market, Mercedes-Benz will offer a non-plug-in mild hybrid called the C300 Bluetec Hybrid, which will pair a range-extending 27-hp electric motor to a 204-hp, 2.2-liter diesel engine. All-electric range for the C300 Bluetec Hybrid is estimated to be a conservative 10 miles. Over here in the U.S. we’ll likely receive the plug-in C350 Bluetec Hybrid in 2015, which could offer a 30-mile all-electric driving range figure. The C350 Bluetec Hybrid will potentially use a 252-hp turbo-four gas engine combined with a 68-hp electric motor to achieve the aforementioned rating.
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan is slated to go on sale in the U.S. in late 2014. It will arrive in two forms, both of which will include 4Matic all-wheel drive. The smaller C300 4Matic uses a 241-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-four, while the brawnier C400 re-introduces a V-6 engine to the Mercedes-Benz lineup with a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine good for 329 hp.
