Much in the same vein as the previous McLaren Special Operations (MSO) 12C concept, the McLaren MSO 650S Coupe concept showcases the available design and engineering capabilities of McLaren’s internal tuning division. The MSO 650S Coupe concept highlights various upgrades consumers can add to both coupe and convertible variants of the 650S and outgoing McLaren 12C.
Most prominent on the McLaren MSO 650S Coupe concept are the upgraded carbon fiber rear diffuser and side blades. Carbon fiber parts on the MSO 650S are finished in black satin, giving the bespoke side blades and two-part rear diffuser a textured performance appearance. Other upgrades include a carbon fiber front splitter, front air intakes, rear bumper inserts, and a satin-finished engine cover. Special metallic black paint, treated with ruby red metallic flake, changes color in direct sunlight and contrasts with the satin black 650S alloy wheels. The interior also contains various carbon fiber elements, such as carbon fiber racing seats that save 33 pounds of weight.
McLaren will offer the bespoke MSO side blades and rear diffuser for about £5114 ($8615) and £7245 ($12,204), respectively. The upgrades will fit 650S and 12C models, which is at least some consolation to 12C buyers who may feel slighted by McLaren’s swift decision to replace that model with the new 650S.
The $265,500 McLaren 650S coupe is, relatively speaking, only marginally more expensive than the outgoing $239,400 12C. Yet, with its a 641-hp, 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 that makes 500 lb-ft of torque, handling upgrades, and sharper looks, the 650S will go down in history as the car the 12C should have been. European bureau chief Georg Kacher said the 650S, “looks funkier, boasts a torquier and more powerful engine, is better equipped, and it’s even more fun to drive.”
McLaren says it will assess the public’s reaction to the MSO 650S Coupe concept to determine the future of a possible production example.
