The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced that it will award a Top Safety Pick rating to the 2015 Subaru WRX. The 2014 Subaru Impreza that the WRX is based on already received a Top Safety Pick award, giving Subaru yet another accolade following the IIHS’s revised criteria. The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek also received a Top Safety Pick.
Although the 2015 Subaru WRX shares a platform with its more economical Impreza sibling, only the roof, glass, and trunk lid are shared between the two models. Saying nothing of its powerful 268-hp, 2.0-liter turbo flat-four engine, the WRX wears its own wider front and rear fender, front and rear fascias, doors, headlights, and hood.
In the IIHS moderate overlap frontal, side impact frontal, and famously stringent small overlap frontal test, the 2015 Subaru WRX received “Good” ratings. Since the IIHS revised its criteria for models beginning with the 2014 model year, vehicles are required to score “Good” in front, side, roof, and head-restraint tests, while scoring either “Good” or “Acceptable” in the small-overlap test, in order to be eligible for an IIHS Top Safety Pick.
Because the Subaru WRX does not include any active safety features like forward collision warning or brake-assist, it could not be considered for the Top Safety Pick+ award. A Top Safety Pick+ status of “Basic” is given to any vehicle with a forward collision warning system, and automatic brake-assisted vehicles can achieve either “Advanced” or “Superior” status depending on performance in testing at 12 and 25 mph.
