With its beginnings as a 1940s military truck converted for civilian use, the Power Wagon has always been a no-nonsense off-roader that could handle whatever stood in its path. The 2014 Ram Power Wagon continues that tradition of fearsome capability, while also adding substantial on-road functionality for the daily driver.
Still based off of the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty 4x4 Crew Cab, the 2014 Ram Power Wagon sees the biggest changes under the hood. The outgoing 5.7-liter V-8 in the 2013 Power Wagon is replaced with a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 with 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. Customers will enjoy the 27-hp boost over the last-generation Power Wagon, particularly if they require heavy-duty towing—the 2014 Ram Power Wagon can now tow up to 10,810 pounds. As an added bonus, when less-equipped friends get stuck in the mud in their trucks, Power Wagon owners can pull them out with a 12,000-pound Warn electric winch mounted behind the front bumper.
The 2014 Ram Power Wagon, with its advanced “Articulunk” front suspension and 5-link coil rear suspension and dual locking differentials, is certainly not your everyday pickup reserved for hauling family members and occasional home repair equipment. Towering above the ground on 2-inch-lifted Bilstein shocks and 17-inch forged-aluminum wheels with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratec tires, the Power Wagon is ready to battle the elements with or without a payload that can max out at 1,490 pounds. The truck's front and rear axles have been enlarged and toughened for 2014, and the rear axle shafts are also larger.
Even with all of those capabilities, the Power Wagon’s new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 has so much torque in the low range that it can afford to deactivate half of its cylinders when possible during cruising. The feature is particularly beneficial for saving fuel on the highway, when the Power Wagon’s maximum grunt isn’t necessary.
Three trim levels are available for the 2014 Ram Power Wagon—SLT, Tradesman, and Laramie. Power Wagon SLT models boast the most prominent visual character, with two-tone paint and special red billet decals as well as LED lighting in the front and rear. Tradesman Power Wagons get black-colored inserts and grille pieces on the front end, alongside black wheel flares and a special decal for the tailgate. The Laramie trim is the most reserved-looking, wearing lots of chrome-trim elements and spoiling its owners with a premium leather-wrapped interior.
