We’ve already heard rumors that plans were in motion for an R-S or R-S GT variant of the Jaguar F-Type. Now there’s even more evidence to support the notion, after spy photographers yet again caught the F-Type testing with R-S performance parts. We previously reported that the Jaguar F-Type will spawn a new derivative every year, with possibilities including a 600-hp coupe, and both R-S and GT models.
Spy shooters spotted a Jaguar F-Type coupe prototype with R-S-looking equipment last summer, and many of the same elements can be observed on this drop-top prototype. Up front there is a wider and more pronounced front spoiler than on the current F-Type R. The aerodynamic upgrades continue in profile where we can see more aggressive rocker sills, leading toward the large rear spoiler and diffuser at the rear. Compared to the coupe spied last year, both the front splitter and rear spoiler appear considerably larger and more pronounced.
While it’s still uncertain whether the Jaguar F-Type R-S or R-S GT would get a power upgrade over the 5.0-liter, supercharged V-8 R coupe's 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque (the most powerful convertible is the 495-hp V8 S), we can expect some other modifications. In addition to the aero, the F-Type convertible prototype displays the same large, blacked-out wheels; yellow “Jaguar Carbon Ceramic”-badged calipers; and cross-drilled rotors as the coupe we spotted last year. Reports also suggest high-performance Jaguar F-Type models could shed some weight.
Jaguar is planning to roll out future models one at a time rather than all in one go, meaning that even if the first car to arrive is the F-Type R-S, a more track-focused R-S GT could be in the cards later on. In the past, Jaguar introduced the XKR-S coupe in 2011, but didn't bring out the XKR-S GT until two years later, at the 2013 New York auto show.
