Toyota Announces Two Recalls For 1.7 Million Models

2009-2010 Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix; 2008-2010 Toyota Highlander; 2009-2010 Toyota Tacoma, 2006-2008 Toyota RAV4, 2006-2010 Toyota Yaris

The Problem: In the affected vehicles, the spiral cable assembly that powers the airbags could be damaged when the steering wheel is turned, causing the airbag warning light to illuminate and potentially deactivating the airbag. Toyota has no reports of injuries or fatalities as a result have taken place as a result of this issue.
The Fix: Toyota dealers will replace the spiral cable with an improved part that Toyota is preparing. The fix will come at no cost to owners.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 1.3 million Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Highlander, Tacoma, RAV4, and Yaris vehicles in the U.S. Globally, Reuters reports that this recall affects 3.5 million cars.

The Problem: In the affected vehicles, the driver’s seat rail, as well as the front passenger seat rail on three-door models, may not lock properly as a result of broken or worn springs. If a crash were to take place in a vehicle with seats that did not lock into place properly, it would increase the risk of injury to the driver or passenger. The issue is most likely to affect vehicles in which the seat is frequently adjusted. There are no known reports of accident or injury as a result of this issue.
The Fix: Toyota will notify owners and instruct dealers to replace the seat track assembly for free, once the remedy becomes available.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 472,500 vehicles in total in the U.S. Approximately 158,000 Yaris hatchacks, 250,500 Yaris sedans, and 64,000 Scion xD vehicles. Globally, Reuters says 2.32 million vehicles are affected by this problem.
