2015 Subaru WRX STI Rally Car Shown at New York Show

We’ve always been big fans of affordable performance and all-weather capability, so the Subaru WRX STI is a perennial favorite. Unfortunately, much of what the 2015 Subaru WRX STI can do is either highly illegal or hugely ill-advised in the real world. In the world of rallying, however, the STI can really shine. At the 2014 New York auto show, Subaru debuted the 2015 Subaru WRX STI rallycross car to promote the upcoming Global Rallycross (GRC) season beginning May 18.
Subaru Rally Team USA, RedBull Global Rallycross, and NBC collaborated for this year’s WRX STI rally car, which uses the 305-hp, 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four 2015 Subaru WRX STI as its base. The STI rally car adds a custom widebody aero kit; a massive, modified carbon-fiber rear wing; a rally-spec roof scoop and side mirrors; and white-painted Method Race wheels with Yokohama racing tires.

Subaru has had much success historically in rally events, and gained significant acclaim with its 1997 FIA World Rally Championship title. The winning racer of that year’s title went on to become the road-going Impreza 22B STI, which continues to be one of the most sought-after and revered STI models ever made.
Whether the 2015 Subaru WRX STI rallycross car will go on to such lofty fame remains to be seen, as we’ll have to wait and see how drivers Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen fare in competition with the fully-outfitted car in the fall. Subaru will also prep the 2015 WRX STI as a stage rally car around the same time, with drivers Travis Pastrana and David Higgins competing in the Rally America Championship.
