Given that neither Morgan’s styling nor manufacturing complexity has changed much throughout its history, the British automaker is an anomaly in the automotive world. In order to honor a century of production at its Pickersleigh Road factory in Malvern, England, Morgan will build a limited-edition Plus 8 Speedster.
While the original Morgan Plus 8 came equipped with a Rover V-8 engine when it debuted as a 1968 model, the Plus 8 Speedster will continue to use a BMW V-8. The 4.8-liter unit makes 367 hp, routed to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission or a ZF six-speed automatic. A modern aluminum chassis underpins the Plus 8 Speedster, while also helping keep weight to a minimum. Acceleration from 0-62 mph can be achieved in a brisk 4.2 seconds on the way to a limited top speed of 148 mph.
Aesthetically, the Morgan Plus 8 Speedster follows the brand’s old-school flavor. Like the classic Morgan 4/4, the Speedster wears the same protruding headlights, half-oval grille with vertical slats, elongated hood, flowing wheel arches, and flared out rear end.
Consistent with Morgan’s tradition of customization for its classic-style roadsters, the Speedster will feature a vast array of options. Numerous exterior paint colors will be available, as well as either black or brown for the Speedster’s old-timey leather hood strap, wheel louvers for the front arches, and a rear roll bar. The Morgan Plus 8 Speedster will be sold with certain styling cues exclusive to the 2014 model, to best recognize the factory’s centennial.
Morgan will start building the Plus 8 Speedster—as always, by hand—this June, with delivery expected later in the summer. Pricing for the limited edition, V-8-powered roadster will begin at £69,995, or about $117,766.
