With the larger Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG on its way out of production, there’s been a lot of anticipation for its smaller successor, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT. We’d only seen spy shots of the sexy-looking future sport coupe, but now a pair of official interior shots confirms our suspicions—this is a place you want to spend lots and lots of time.
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT adopts the same smooth and flowing interior design we’ve seen on the modern generation S-, C-, and CLA-Class vehicles. Yet, the AMG GT’s cabin looks to be much wider and less cluttered. Purity and clarity of form take precedence over ornamentation here, making the subtle door-panel ribbing and leather-embossed AMG logo on the center armrest all the more stirring.
Four chrome-trimmed, circular air vents populate the center dashboard, where a large color display nestles in neatly against luxurious black leather and detailed red stitching. Dividing the sporty two-tone bucket seats is a bulbous center console housing Mercedes’ now-familiar touchpad and Comand controller. Two sets of buttons, which look to operate functions such as suspension dampening, traction control, the start-stop mechanism, exhaust sound, and a manual transmission mode sit in a V-8 configuration to mimic the eight-cylinder, handmade AMG engine that will lurk up front. Rumors suggest that the 2015 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT will pack about 450 hp from a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, while a future AMG GT Black Series could unleash as much as 600 hp.
Based on the spy shots we’ve seen, expect the AMG GT to squeeze the elegant styling and extended-hood proportions of the outgoing SLS AMG into more compact package. Gone for now are the old car's eye-catching gullwing doors. The AMG GT will be lighter and smaller, though, offering greater agility and a more accessible entry price. We anticipate a starting price competitive with that of the $98,900, 400-hp 2014 Porsche Carrera S coupe.
Mercedes-Benz says the car will debut this fall. Expect the automaker to come forward with more details before the AMG GT debuts, which presumably could take place at the 2014 Paris auto show.
