Earlier this month, Land Rover provided us with a teaser image of its upcoming New York auto show concept, the Land Rover Discovery Vision. The new concept will preview the future design of the Freelander/LR2 and Discovery/LR4 models, but it will also be a testing ground for a host of new technology.
Chief among these new tech tidbits will be a feature known as the “Transparent Hood.” Using cameras mounted underneath the front of the Land Rover Discovery Vision concept, drivers will be able to see usually obscured areas of the vehicle projected directly onto a full-width head-up display along the bottom of the windshield. If the illusion works as advertised, it will appear as if the hood is transparent, giving the driver a handy view of the terrain and wheel position during tight turns or o“We are developing new technologies including the Transparent Hood to give drivers an augmented view of reality to help them tackle anything from the toughest off-road route to the tight confines of urban parking,” said Jaguar Land Rover’s research and technology director Dr. Wolfgang Epple in a statement.
In addition to the rolodex of new technology samplings, the Land Rover Discovery Vision concept will also showcase the company’s significant investment in four-cylinder engines. We’ll likely see a turbocharged four-banger closely related to the 2.0-liter powerplant used in the Evoque crossover. The next-gen Discovery is predicted to arrive in either 2016 or 2017 in various body styles ranging from a pint-sized compact crossover to a midsized, five-seat Discovery Sport and a long-wheelbase seven-seat Discovery Grand.
