A big part of the success of the Volkswagen GTI is its affordability, and the newest model will be no different. The 2015 Volkswagen GTI will start at just $25,215, including an $820 destination charge, when it goes on sale in June.
That price is for the base GTI S two-door with a six-speed manual transmission, and it represents an increase of just $195 compared to the last two-door GTI sold in the U.S. (For 2014, Volkswagen sold the outgoing GTI only as a four-door in the pricier Wolfsburg and Driver's Edition trims.) The four-door GTI S starts at $25,815.
All versions of the new 2015 Volkswagen GTI use an upgraded EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine rated for 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, increases of 10 hp and 51 lb-ft compared to the outgoing hot hatch. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but upgrading to the six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic costs $1100 on any model.
The 2015 Volkswagen GTI S comes standard with a touchscreen audio system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED foglights, heated front seats, Bluetooth, and the VW Car-Net connectivity system. An optional $995 Lighting package adds adaptive xenon headlights with LED running lights. The $695 Driver Assistance pack adds forward collision warning and parking sensors.
Upgrading to the 2015 Volkswagen GTI SE means buyers get as standard a sunroof, push-button start, a backup camera, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, a Fender sound system, and leather seats. The SE costs $28,215 with a manual transmission with two doors, or $28,815 with four doors.
The final variant is the 2015 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn, which starts at $30,415 in two-door guise and $31,015 with four doors. Atop the SE's equipment list, it adds navigation, a 12-way power driver's seat, and automatic climate control.
Later this year, Volkswagen will make a $1495 Performance package available for all versions of the new GTI. It adds larger brakes, an extra ten horsepower (bringing total output to 220 hp), and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. GTI SE and Autobahn cars equipped with this package can also add the Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive suspension package, which costs $880.
The new-generation GTI is also more fuel efficient than before. According to the EPA, the 2015 Volkswagen GTI will achieve 25/34 mpg (city/highway) with a manual transmission and 25/33 with the DSG dual-clutch. The old car had ratings of 21/31 mpg with the manual and 24/32 mpg with the dual-clutch.
