2015 Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon Offer Child Seat Extension

Recognizing the fact that many people use pickup trucks as family vehicles, Chevrolet and GMC have developed a new feature for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon that will make it much easier to install a child seat in the rear jump seats of extended-cab models. Since these rear jump seats are typically too small to accommodate a child restraint, this new system uses the removable headrest as a seat cushion extender which provides a larger base for the child seat.

The seat-extender feature is simple to operate, as it entails removing the headrest on the passenger’s side rear seat and inserting it into the front of the seat cushion (see video below). This extends the base of the seat, meaning that the jump seat will meet the child restraint recommendation that says at least 80 percent of the child seat base should fit onto the seat cushion. This solution features only on extended-cab models of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, as regular-cab models do not have a rear seat and crew-cab models have a full-size rear seat that accommodates a child seat normally.

The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon go on sale this fall, entering into the midsize pickup truck segment with the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. These all-new trucks will come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, with a 3.6-liter V-6 as optional and a 2.8-liter turbodiesel to follow next year. We don’t yet know pricing for these trucks, but they will be available in rear- or four-wheel-drive versions, as well as with numerous cab configurations and bed lengths.
