2015 BMW X5 eDrive Concept Headed to New York Auto Show

BMW will bring the BMW X5 eDrive Concept to the 2014 New York auto show for its North American debut, after the concept first bowed earlier this year in Frankfurt. Based on the latest BMW X5, the BMW X5 eDrive Concept adopts numerous technology and styling points from the German automaker’s Project i department.
When the inevitable production version arrives, it’s hard to imagine it will look much different than the BMW X5 eDrive Concept. The hybrid concept looks just about ready for the open market, given that it lacks any extravagant or unlikely show-car features. Power comes from a 245-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged unit likely similar to the one across BMW’s lineup of smaller vehicles, combined with a 95-hp electric motor (25 hp more than the Frankfurt version had), and a lithium-ion battery mounted beneath the cargo area.
With power sent to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive system, the BMW X5 eDrive Concept can sprint to 62 mph in under 7.0 seconds. Using solely electric power from the electric motor generating 184 lb-ft of readily available torque, the hybrid concept SUV can travel up to 75 mph before the combustion engine intervenes. Range on pure electric energy tops out at about 19 miles.
Technology is a huge component of the BMW X5 eDrive Concept, providing drivers with plenty of useful information about consumption and performance. Real-time electric range is available on the instrument cluster, which will update according to variables like traffic conditions and driving style. The system can also communicate with the vehicle’s navigation system to recommend charging stations and help drivers plan a route to maximize efficiency and estimate charging times.
We’ve spied test prototypes for the BMW X5 eDrive out in the wild, so there’s little doubt that it will come to U.S. shores in production form. After the New York show, we’ll hopefully have a better idea of when it will arrive, so stay tuned for more details. At the earliest it could launch at the end of 2014.
