Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept Debuts In China With 395 HP

Following rumors of a high-powered Golf R Evo, Volkswagen released design sketches of a two-door Golf R 400 concept car set to debut on April 19 at the 2014 Beijing auto show. The Volkswagen Golf R 400 receives a powerful engine tune as well as a comprehensive body kit and interior upgrade over the standard 2015 Golf R.
Powering the Volkswagen Golf R 400 concept is the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the regular Golf R, but in this application it produces 395 hp compared to the 290 hp it makes in the standard car. In our earlier report on the rumored Golf R Evo, we noted that the power increase on that model is rumored to come in part from a new cylinder head and induction system. The Golf R 400 is also equipped with all-wheel drive and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which helps the concept spring to 62 mph in only 3.9 seconds—a full second swifter than the Golf R does the deed. Top speed is a sizzling 174 mph.

Volkswagen says that the Golf R 400 concept draws from the 1988 Rallye Golf G60 for inspiration, particularly with regard to the flared wheel arches and weight reduction. Other exterior modifications include more aggressive front and rear bumpers, beefier rocker sills, a carbon fiber front diffuser and side mirrors, a big roof-mounted rear spoiler, and upgraded five-spoke wheels. Silver Flake metallic paint with Lemon Yellow highlights match the stripped interior’s yellow stitching, while motorsport-spec shell seats with integral head rests and belt openings complete the sporty cabin.
The Volkswagen Golf R 400 concept is apparently not planned for production at this time, but there’s no telling whether it could later become an exclusive, limited-run model like the aforementioned Evo model that’s rumored to be in development. Stay tuned for more details on Volkswagen’s hottest Golf when it debuts on April 19 at the Beijing auto show.
